Who’s Checking In on the Men We Love?

June is Men’s Health Month, and as the month comes to a close, it’s a good reminder to check in on the men we love—our fathers, grandfathers, husbands, brothers, neighbors, and friends.

Many older men are reluctant to ask for help. They may put off seeing a doctor, dismiss health concerns, or simply insist they’re doing fine. When they’re living alone, those challenges can become even greater.

A few years ago, a gentleman affectionately known as “Lil James” suffered a major stroke. His closest family was his sister, who lived in Texas. She knew he needed more than medical care. He needed someone nearby to make sure he was eating well, regaining his strength, and able to live safely at home.

She called St. Vincent Meals on Wheels.

Our registered dietitian helped James regain weight and strength. Our social workers connected him with resources and arranged for a handrail to be installed so he could safely enter and leave his home. Each day, one of our drivers delivered a healthy meal along with something just as important—a friendly face and a wellness check.

Little by little, James recovered.

His story reminds us that good health is about so much more than medicine.

It’s about nutritious food.

It’s about safety.

It’s about knowing someone cares enough to knock on your door tomorrow.

James’ story—and the story of St. Vincent Meals on Wheels—is a reminder that none of us is meant to face life’s challenges alone.

For nearly 50 years, the Daughters of Charity, our volunteers, and generous donors have made it possible to deliver more than healthy meals. Together, we’ve delivered food and love to homebound fathers, grandfathers, husbands, brothers, and neighbors across Los Angeles County.

As we prepare to celebrate our first 50 years and begin the next 50, our promise remains the same: to be there for every homebound senior who needs us. With your continued support, we’ll keep delivering food and love—one meal, one visit, and one person at a time.

Thank you for helping make that possible.

Have a wonderful week.
