The Simple Power of Showing Up
There is something powerful about showing up.
Not in a grand way—but through the simple act of being there for someone. Seeing them. Listening. Serving.
We see it in volunteers like Western Kramer, who joined St. Vincent Meals on Wheels seeking a way to help and found something more. Out on his routes delivering meals and checking on clients, he’s part of a quiet but essential truth: sometimes the visit is just as important as the meal.
We see it in students and alumni from the USC Price School of Public Policy who helped beautify Hotel Dieu—creating a space that feels more like home.
In the young people from Niagara University who came for a service “plunge,” immersing themselves fully in the work—side by side in the kitchen and throughout the building.
And in the students from St. John’s University who joined us earlier this year, each drawn to the work that has been carried forward for nearly 50 years on Miramar Street.
We see it as well in our partners, including Kroger, whose teams have shown up time and again—most recently alongside Patrick Duffy and Linda Purl—to support this work in meaningful, hands-on ways.
Different paths. Same purpose.
As we approach our 50th year, our guiding principle remains—the commitment to go #BeyondTheMeal, to see the person in front of us as the most important individual in that moment, and to respond with care that is both practical and genuinely human.
And right now, that commitment is being tested. As costs continue to rise, the resources required to prepare and deliver food and love to our seniors are stretched further each day.
Because of you, this work continues. Whether you give your time, your heart, or your financial support, each act of generosity makes this circle of care possible.
If you can, please consider making a gift today to help us continue delivering food and love.
Through the simple act of showing up, we are reminded how we build community—and how we thrive.
