Stepping in Where Funding Falls Short: Feeding LA’s Homebound Seniors
Last week, our CEO, Veronica Dover, spent nearly 20 minutes on FOX LA speaking about a growing crisis — rising costs and what they mean for homebound seniors across Los Angeles.
News organizations are paying attention because the situation is real. Fuel costs are rising. Food and supply costs are rising. And funding has not kept pace.
Just days ago, nearly 200 seniors lost their meal service overnight when a program relying on government funding was forced to shut down.
At St. Vincent Meals on Wheels, we are privately funded — and we are stepping in to help absorb many of those seniors.
But we cannot do it alone. We need the support of our donors and partners now more than ever.
As Veronica shared during the interview:
“We do what we do because we have a love for seniors — a love for making a difference. That smile you see when they open the door is the reason we do what we do.”
For many of the seniors we serve, this is not just a meal — it is often the only food they will receive that day, and a daily connection they depend on.
There is a story about a boy walking along the beach, returning starfish to the ocean one by one. When told he could not make a difference, he replied:
“I made a difference for that one.”
It is in these small, faithful acts that something larger is sustained.
This is the work in front of us. Food and love — delivered every day.
Please consider making a gift today. Because of you, we can keep going.
