Intergenerational Connections: Enriching Lives at St. Vincent Meals on Wheels and Hotel Dieu

Recognizing that the need for human connection is as vital as the hot, nutritious meals we prepare and deliver, we understand the importance of interacting with our homebound and often isolated clients. Just as all living things thrive on interaction, our clients experience a significant boost in well-being when they feel seen and heard.

Our programs are incredibly fortunate to have regular groups of young students who volunteer in our kitchen and at Hotel Dieu, our low-cost senior housing facility. These intergenerational relationships bring immense joy to both the seniors and the students. The laughter, shared stories, and moments of connection not only enrich the lives of our seniors but also foster a sense of purpose and happiness.

Research shows that engaging with younger generations can boost cognitive function and reduce feelings of isolation in seniors. Whether it’s helping our seniors learn new technology, enjoying a game, or celebrating a holiday, these interactions stimulate both minds and hearts, bringing joy to everyone involved.

The students from St. John’s College and the volunteers from the University of Southern California Catholic Center have a profoundly positive impact on these connections. We are deeply grateful for the support of our volunteers and generous donors, whose contributions make these meaningful interactions possible. Together, we combat loneliness and promote the mental and emotional health of our seniors, reminding them that they are valued and cherished members of our community.
