Celebrating 50 Years of Food and Love ∙ 1977 – 2027

On a warm evening in 1977, a humble Daughter of Charity stood in a local church kitchen with nothing but a few large pots of stew and an unshakeable conviction. Her name was Sister Alice Marie Quinn. Looking out at the isolated, hungry seniors living in the apartments surrounding our hospital, she refused to let them be forgotten.

That night, Sister Alice Marie served exactly 83 meals. It was a single, beautiful act of compassionate service. When she saw the overwhelming gratitude of those seniors, she turned to her volunteers and remarked:

“In the beginning, it was just us and a few pots of stew. But the response was tremendous, and it became impossible to ignore the great need in the community. Over the years it became so much more than plates of food; it became friendship, family, and nourishment for the soul.”

Next year, on July 7, 2027, St. Vincent Meals on Wheels will officially mark its 50th Anniversary. Five decades of delivering food and love across Los Angeles. Five decades of keeping our sacred promise that no homebound senior will be turned away due to their inability to pay.

But as we prepare to step across this historic golden threshold, the summer heat reminds us that our legacy is not defined by the past. It is proven by what we do today.

Right now, over 250,000 seniors in Los Angeles are facing severe hunger insecurity. As June temperatures climb, our homebound neighbors become deeply isolated. The heat can make it impossible for frail seniors to cook or walk to a grocery store. For many, our driver is the only human face they will see all day, and our delivery is the only real nutrition they will receive.

To prepare our kitchen for the massive 50th Anniversary milestone ahead, we must secure our summer delivery lines today. Your gift this June ensures that we can continue serving over 100,000 meals every single month without interruption.

Your faithful generosity guarantees:

  • Tailored Medical Protocols: Nutritious, low-sodium, renal, and cardiac meals customized precisely for vulnerable heart and kidney patients.
  • Critical Wellness Checks: Vital safety door-knocks by drivers to ensure homebound seniors are safe and hydrated.
  • Nourishment for the Soul: The simple, powerful antidote to isolation-the reliable comfort of knowing that someone remembers them, respects them, and loves them.

Sister Alice Marie always remained deeply humble about the incredible movement she started, reminding us: “I am only helping to deliver what God provides. Fortunately, many volunteers and donors are also helping. Without their support, we would not have this program.”

You are the living fulfillment of that vision. We cannot fulfill our legacy next year if we do not sustain our neighbors through these summer months.

Please help us honor 50 years of compassion by keeping our delivery vans fueled and our kitchen stoves burning this summer. Send your special Legacy contribution today.

Give Food. Give Love.

With deep milestone gratitude,
